The article is put in front of the noun and is of the same gender and same number as the noun.

The article can be A) definite (= articolo determinativo)and B) indefinite (articolo indeterminativo).

A) L’articolo determinativo (the definite article THE)

L’articolo determinativo maschile (= The masculine article)

Singolare (= singular) Plurale (= plural) Uso (= use)
il libro (= the book) i libri (the books) before a consonant (= davanti a consonante)  
lo student (= the student)  lo zio (= the uncle)  lo gnomo (= the gnome) gli studenti (= the students) gli zii (the uncles)  gli gnomi (= the gnomes) before gn, ps, z, x,   y, s + consonant
(davanti a gn, ps, z, x, y, s + consonante)
l’amico (= the friend) gli amici (= the friends) before a vowel (davanti a vocale)

Please, study curefully the above article. Write it more times on your notebook and add the right article in all masculine nouns you have learned in previous lessons.

L’articolo determinativo feminile 

Singolare (= singular) Plurale (= plural) Uso (= use)
la sedia (= the chair) le sedie (= the chairs) before a consonant (= davanti a consonante)  
(la + vowel =) l’amica (= the friend) le amiche (= the friends) before a vowel (davanti a vocale)

Please, study curefully the above article. Write it more times on your notebook and add the right article in all feminine nouns you have learned in previous lessons.

B) L’articolo indeterminativo (= The indefinite article) is used when referring to a generic person or animal or  to a general thing.

L’articolo indeterminativo maschile (= masculine indefinite article)

solamente Singolare (= singular) Uso   (=   use)
un libro (= a   book) before a consonant (= davanti a consonante)  
uno   zio (= an uncle) uno gnomo (= a gnome) before   gn, ps, z, x, y, s + consonant
(davanti a gn, ps, z, x, y, s + consonante)
(uno + vowel =) un amico (= a friend) before a vowel (davanti a vocale)

L’articolo indeterminativo feminile  (= feminine indefinite article) 

solamente Singolare (= only singular) Uso (= use)
una sedia (= a chair) before a consonant (= davanti a consonante)  
(una + vowel =) un’amica (= a friend) before a vowel (davanti a vocale)

As an exercise, please write multiple times on your notebook all the new words you have learned today, while you pronounce them correctly and aloud. For the correct pronunciation, please consult the alphabet.
