The Italian language (italiano or lingua italiana), which derives from Latin, is spoken in Italy, Switzerland (where Italian is one of the 4 official languages) San Marino, Vatican City and also by minorities in Malta, Monaco, Croatia, Slovenia, France, Libya, Eritrea, Somalia and by immigrant communities in America and Australia.

Italian is spoken as a mother tongue by 65 million people in the EU (13% of the EU population), but the total number of speakers in the world is more than 85 million. The Italian language has about 60,000 words and is one of the richest in the world!

Learning a foreign language enriches and enhances mental development and self-confidence  (which is the key ingredient of happiness and success) as it stimulates the mind and empowering people with a sense of control. In fact, it has a positive effect on intellectual growth and especially when the foreign language is learned at an early age. Research showed that those with competency in more than one language tend to have higher intelligence on tests.

Foreign languages are also important to one’s career (especially when the business is an international one with a multi-cultural staff base) as it facilitates international relationships. Speaking the other party’s language helps make a great impression, it shows that you are willing to go above and beyond to maintain the relationship and, in many cultures, the attempt to speak the language is viewed as a sign of respect.

Another good reason to start study another language is the fact that, a foreign language gives the access to a different culture. This develops awareness between people, where a common cultural framework does not exist, in order to promote clear lines of communication and better relationships.

Through learning about other cultures, barriers, such as preconceptions, prejudices and stereotypes that obstruct our understanding of other people, are gradually disappeared, allowing for more open relationships and dialogue. When the barriers are disappeared, mutual understanding follows, which results in greater trust. Once trust is established altruistic tendencies naturally manifest, allowing for greater co-operation and a more productive workplace. Also, learning about other cultures, helps people learn more about themselves through learning about others cultures, preconceptions, mentalities and worldviews.

Start learning a foreign language develops listening skills; by becoming good listeners, people naturally become good communicators.

Start learning a second language definitely improves literacy skills. In fact, learning a foreign language means learn a wide variety of vocabulary, subjects, objects, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and how to use them, in order to build correctly sentences. To obtain this you need a notebook and a pen (your precious tools) because you have to write down many times each new word you learn. Also repetition is very important; you have to repeat loudly and correctly many times every new word you learn, in order to become familiar with it. Learn a few words a day, but do it every day; it is very important!
